Some politicians and representatives of health care providers would have you believe that instances of medical malpractice are rare and the issue is overblown. The statistics say otherwise.
Medical malpractice has become the third highest cause of death in the United States. Every year, approximately 12,000 people die from unnecessary surgery; 7,000 die from medication errors; 20,000 die from assorted hospital errors; 80,000 die from nosocomial infections acquired in hospitals; and an astounding 106,000 deaths occur due to the adverse effects and complications associated with various medications. In sum, medical malpractice causes a staggering 225,000 deaths a year in the United States alone. The number of people seriously injured as a result of medical malpractice is, of course, considerably higher. Worse, the number of deaths and injuries seems to be growing.
Given the scope of the problem, you may wonder how many people actually receive compensation for the injuries they have suffered due to medical malpractice, or how many families receive compensation for the death of a loved one. Surprisingly few. In fact, only 2 percent of those who have been victimized by medical malpractice ever attempt to gain compensation through lawsuits. An even smaller percentage receives any compensation at all.
If you or a loved one is a victim of medical malpractice, you owe it to yourself to file a claim. After all, the only way to stop the spread of medical malpractice is for victims and their families to take action against the medical professionals and institutions that have harmed them.
